Be a responsible explorer

Make sure you have food, water, fuel, and tire changing equipment.  Bring all your camping equipment too.  There are MANY side off-road trails so make sure to follow your GPS and map if you have it.

Are you looking for an incredible easy off-road drive into some of Wyoming’s most amazing scenery?   This is for you!

Bring the bear spray because you are in bear country!  If you camp, make sure you pack up all scented items away in a secure spot like your vehicle or a bear box.

After stopping at a local Dubois diner for dinner, our waitress told us about a really fun drive up to Double Cabin.  We told her we weren’t interested in camping there since we already had a place in town, but she told us the drive alone was worth it.   The next day we packed up and headed out to the cabin!  We didn’t really know what to expect other and were VERY happy the waitress told us about this amazing place!

We began our trip on N Horsecreek Rd just inside the town of Dubois.  You will wind through town for a bit before you hit some farm and ranch land.  The first part of the journey isn’t the most picturesque, but we enjoyed seeing this side of Dubois.  You will be travelling on Forest Service Route 285 for the entire time.

The first campground you will come to is called Horse Creek Campground.   It’s at about 10.6 miles of driving and on the left side of the road.  It’s a small campground, but has potable water, picnic tables, and an outhouse.   It’s located right next to Horse Creek and has some nice trees to provide shade.

From the campground, cross the creek and take a left to continue on to Double Cabin Campground.  From Horse Creek to Double Cabin, it’s another 14.5 miles.   This is where the journey gets more beautiful!  The mountains get taller and sharper, the forests more full, the valleys more wide!  Bring your camera!

There are many amazing overlooks to the incredible vistas!  We stopped many times to get pictures and just enjoy it all.  You will find large open green meadows, forests, and mountain landscapes that make you want to come back and try to hike them all!

I think this is called Lincoln Point below.

We finally arrived at Double Cabin and found a quiet place that was still somewhat thawing from the previous winter’s snow.  We found several RVs and trailers already settling in for the early summer.  It was a very peaceful and tranquil place that we enjoyed immensely.   If you do visit, please pick up some trash and keep this place clean.  We picked up a few bags and cans that were left behind.  This place is beautiful and deserves to be kept beautiful.  If you camp, please pack out all your trash.

The campground is nice and offers incredible views of the valley.  We found a few trailers in the large meadow area below to the campground to the east.

After eating a lunch, we decided to hike to the ranger station across the creek.  I don’t recommend doing this hike since it requires getting wet almost up to your waist and if you don’t know how to properly cross a creek you could easily break an ankle or slip and bash your head on a rock.  It was kind of tricky for us since the creek is wide and the water was fast.  And, we had my friend’s dog Maggie.

The creek we had to cross is called Frontier Creek.  Wiggins Fork Creek meets up with Frontier Creek just below where we crossed making the creek almost into a braided river.

We crossed over (after I rolled my ankle) and hiked towards the cabin.  We were half expecting to see a ranger at the cabin, but didn’t see anyone.   The cabin looks old and possibly abandoned.   It’s kind of in a weird spot for easy access for rangers.  Yet, it was surrounded on all sides by a wooden fence and probably had the best view of Norton Peak to the north.  The cabin looked old and it was fun to explore a little around the area.

Norton Peak (below)

On our way back to our car, we saw a moose in the meadow who wouldn’t stop staring at us.  Probably, because we had Maggie and the moose wasn’t sure what to make of it.  We kept our distance and eventually went a different way back to altogether avoid the moose.

We got back to the place we were spending the night and found this cottontail rabbit sitting in a bucket outside of our cabin!

I loved our drive out to Double Cabin! It was one of the highlights for me on our trip to Dubois. It would be very much worth the drive, wherever you are, to visit this majestic and scenic place!
