These are neat to see as you are going to/from the city of Page.
While driving back from Lake Powell, I noticed something on the side of some short cliffs near the road. I thought I saw some Moki steps. Moki steps are ancient carved foot and handholds that allow a person to go up or down a steep rock face.
There are many sites like this all over this region. I’ve found other sites at the city of Page too.
I came back to investigate. The steps seem to be legitimate. Sometimes, naturally occurring indentations in the rock appear to be from erosion, but these appear to be anciently carved.
I counted about 11 steps here and they are pretty worn down. Where do they lead? I tried to climb them, but the steps weren’t big enough for me to climb up in my bulky shoes. So, I hiked around the other side.
From the back side, you can get a good view of where the steps lead. It looks like this was a lookout area. Or there could have been a small structure that has since been destroyed or dismantled.
I didn’t see any petroglyphs in the alcove and I couldn’t reach it because it was too steep. But, from what I could tell, there wasn’t anything in this spot.
