Be a responsible explorer

The petroglyphs can be accessed by all types of vehicles.  You will be driving through part of the Sand Island Campground, so the road is maintained.

These petroglyphs are very easy to get to.  In fact, you drive right up to them.  Many of the rock art is protected behind a fence, so please respect the boundaries and stay behind the fence.  You can get plenty close without climbing over.

The Sand Island Petroglyphs were created up to about 3,000 years ago.  Many are still in incredible condition despite thousands of years of rain, snow, and wind.  You can also see much vandalism, which is disappointing.  Please do not touch the rock art or carve your name.  The petroglyphs span about 100 yards long and there are even pockets of more petroglyphs along the rock wall farther to the east.

You can see a kokopelli and also a sheep playing a flute.  There are many other types of petroglyphs including big horn sheep, elk, anthropomorphs, symbols, spirals, and much more!  There is a nice dirt trail that goes along the base of the sandstone wall where all the rock art is located.

Flute playing sheep!

Personal Thoughts

Personal Thoughts

If you are short on time, then do this! Or, if you want to extend your Bluff/Comb Ridge adventure, visit these petroglyphs. We loved stopping here and spending a half hour seeing all the incredible rock art. On a different trip, I was staying at the Sand Island Campground and saw several cars pull up to the petroglyphs, take pictures, and leave. You can even see these without leaving your vehicle!
