Black Diamond Icon Headlamp

by February 4, 2015

Introduction

I have had this light now for almost 2 years. It is by far the most useful light I own as an everyday light. It doesn’t do anything the best but does everything good. I find myself using it far more than any other light I own and I use lights for a lot of things. This lamp has a max output of 320 lumens. I have brighter lights but this is far more usable as far as options go. In any mode you simply hold down the button to dim the light to whatever you want giving you unlimited light output options instead of toggling through modes like most lights. This makes it very useful whether hiking or things around the house. I use this light a ton for mechanic work.  It runs on four AA batteries. I have used the same set of rechargeables since I bought the light and it works great. It is fully waterproof and has a very comfortable and stable head strap. It is large enough to use on helmets and small enough to fit on small heads. I have beat the crap out of this strap in caves and mines and it has no tears or rips and is still very elastic. Weight with batteries is 8 ounces. I have never noticed the weight on my head. The lamp is waterproof as well and that is a feature I have put to use many times. This light also has a lockout feature to make sure you don’t turn it on in your bag and waste batteries. The light also has a very small bulb that changes colors as your batteries deplete to let you know how much power you have left.

Cost

$89.95 if you buy it from Black Diamond

Light Output Settings

1. One large quad power LED that starts at 320 lumens and can be dimmed to your own preference.

2. Two single LED’s that are very useful if you don’t need really bright and don’t want to blind people. These are also dimmable.

3. Two Red LED’s that are very useful at night. These are also dimmable.

4. Strobe setting for any of the light options.

Positives

Lighting options, Lockout, Waterproof, Durable, Battery Level Indicator

Negatives

The Bottom Line

This is the light I use far more than any other. I have beat the crap out of it in many different environments. If I were to choose just one light to own (I have many) this is the one I would pick.
