Be a responsible explorer

Bohol is an absolutely beautiful island in the Philippines.  There are many popular and hidden places that make this island one of my favorite places to visit.  Mag-Aso Falls is one of those amazing places and worth the trouble of getting out this far!

From Tagbilaran City, we found a Jeepney that would take us to the town of Antequera.  It took about 45 minutes to get to the town and cost us about 40 pesos per person.  It was pretty packed on the Jeepney as more and more people got on too but overall it was a fun journey to the falls.  If you don’t want to take a Jeepney and have a rental car, you can drive right to the entrance to the falls.  There are also tour operators around Tagbilaran City that could drive you to the falls for a hefty cost.

Once the Jeepney arrived in “downtown” Antequera, we simply walked the 1.25 miles to Mag-Aso falls.  It was a pleasant walk and it was nice being out the city and walking down the rural areas.  There isn’t much elevation gain on this hike but the hot and humid weather made us sweat like crazy!  I mean, I was literally sweating non-stop the entire way and we were walking slow!

I don’t know all the street names but the street just south of the field where the giant pavilion is located downtown is the road you need to take.  Follow it down for about 1/2 mile and the road will continue straight or turn left.

Take the left and then follow the road down for another 1/2 mile until you see the “Welcome to Mag-Aso Falls” sign.

Turn right and then follow the trail until you come to a small payag (house).  You will need to pay the entrance fee – it cost us 20 pesos per person in December 2018.

There are a few hundred stairs down to the falls from here.  We were the only people at the falls during our visit so it was quite nice having the entire place to ourselves.

Picnic area

Mag-Aso, which means “smoking” in Binisaya, were recently destroyed with high waters sometime during 2018.  They used to be much more beautiful but now they are somewhat broken but still beautiful and worth the visit.

On both sides of the river along the limestone rock walls, people have cut out hand and foot holds for you to climb up and jump off into the water.  I climbed up a few of them and it was fun cliff jumping into the refreshing water.

Lots of limestone steps

Personal Thoughts

Personal Thoughts

Mag-Aso falls is a great waterfall for the whole family! We really enjoyed our visit and will visit again if we are in Bohol! It was nice to have the entire place to ourselves, but don't always count on being alone here. We suspect that this place gets busy when school is out or on weekends.
