The Trail:

Quake Lake is a great way to spend an hour if you are in or near West Yellowstone or Island Park. It is a lake that was created by a very large Earthquake which resulted in the Madison Slide in 1959. Here is a bit of the story.

There is a large visitor center with some cool info.

This is what the slide looks like today. You can see some of the giant boulders still there on the other side of the canyon from the slide.

You can see the thin long lake that is a result of the natural Dam created in the slide.

The views down the Madison are also beautiful as it heads toward Ennis, Montana.

Once you have checked out the sights make sure to drive the length of the lake where you can still see the ghosts of the old forest now buried in water.

Personal Thoughts:

This is a cool place to spend an hour or two and the drive to and from the lake is gorgeous. Its a cool place but I wouldn’t plan a full day for it by any means.

The Bottom Line

Difficulty is basically the length, duration and stress of the Trek. If the Trek is really long then it will receive a higher rating. If the Trek is short then it won't receive that high of a rating. However, difficulty rating also includes how tired we were at the end of the Trek.

Technicality is how strenuous the Trek is. If there is lots of bouldering or if there is bushwhacking involved then the rating will be higher. Technicality also includes if there are steep inclines or the need for ropes and other equipment.

Enjoyment is strictly how much fun we had doing the Trek. Regardless of how tired and exhausted we were, if we had a ton of fun doing the Trek then it will receive a higher rating.
