Adventure Snapshot

This adventure was Weird Kind of Disappointing Interesting

Day 1

Saturday, November 20

Destination: An area south of Green River to do some investigative work

Today I was doing a simple trip to the Green River, Utah area.  I found some interesting things on Google Earth and left early in the morning to go scout them out!

First thing on my list was the drive.  I wasn’t sure what to expect.  I checked my route on some maps and it seemed like it would be a nice graded dirt road, and to my surprise, I was right!

From where I left Green River to my turn south, I thought I wouldn’t be seeing much of anything until much later on my journey.  But right off the bat, I saw some interesting things, including this grave!  I’m not sure the story on it.

The road winds around all over tops of mesas and hills.   It was very easy to traverse in my low-clearance vehicle and I stopped several times to get some pictures.

After about an hour of driving, I finally got to where I wanted to be.  I pulled out my drone and flew it to where I thought would be some ruins.  I couldn’t get too close with the drone since the angle was weird and the connectivity to my controller was going out.  On my initial drone flight, it didn’t appear to be ruins though :-/

Since I already drove this far, I decided to hike to the feature anyway.  It was a short hike and it felt like I had been the only one here for many years.

I finally got close and could immediately see that this was some sort of pot hole.  It was pretty deep, (maybe about 3-4 ft in places), but it was definitely not ruins.  That’s OK.  Not all adventures have to end with earth-shattering discoveries.  I was still having lots of fun exploring a new area, and I still had two more places to check out before heading home!

My next stop was back north.  I drove out to see the Chaffin Ranch Geyser.  The geyser wasn’t even bubbling, but there were many small pools of water indicating there had been recent activity.

The geyser was kind of neat to see.  There is tons of trash and abandoned vehicles and machinery everywhere.

The next thing on my list was what I was most excited for.  A while back I found this strange circular shape in the open desert and thought it was also ruins.  But now, it was getting darker and I didn’t have extra time to hike to it, so I had to use the drone again to see it.

The drone showed that this was not a ruin, but some type of sandstone feature.  It looked like a crown in some of my pictures, so I have now named it Desert Crown for my own reference.

I’m not sure what this is, but it appears to be over 6 ft. tall!

After this, I had about 20 more minutes before the sun set, so I flew my drone around to scout for petroglyphs.  I didn’t find any, but still had a great time exploring this area.

Lessons Learned

This was still an enjoyable trip despite not finding any ruins
