Be a responsible explorer

The Upper Sand Island Petroglyphs are very easy to get to.  In fact, they are located at the eastern end of the Sand Island Campground.  Please be respectful as you drive towards the trailhead because you will be parking next to people’s campsites.

The petroglyphs are scattered on the rock walls right where you park.  You can see some of them with minimal effort.  Read the sign at the trailhead for more information on how these important rock art were documented and recorded to preserve them.   Since these are easy to get to, many people have stupidly vandalized them or have even carved their own names on the rocks.

There are over 65 rock art panels and most are “located 20-50 feet above the current ground surface,” reads the sign.

There are four different styles of petroglyphs found here: Glen Canyon Linear Archaic, Basket Maker II Ancestral Puebloan, Navajo Proto-historic, and Ute Proto-historic.  Please admire these with your camera and do not touch the rock art.

The trail continues on along the rock wall, so keep going if you want to explore more.

Make sure you stop and see the Sand Island Petroglyphs farther to the west, but also in the same campground.

Personal Thoughts

Personal Thoughts

This is an easy hike to some great petroglyphs. Many have since faded and are difficult to see.
