You will need binoculars or a telephoto lens to view this rock art panel. You can view this panel right from your car though.
I found this petroglyph panel when I was flying my drone to explore some alcoves on a rock wall. The alcoves had remnants of ancient structures but have since become homes to ravens. When I was flying my drone back from the alcoves I thought I saw some scratchings on a cliff wall high up. I flew the drone to check it out and saw that the scratchings were petroglyphs!
There are several dozen distinct petroglyphs that include anthropomorphs with their arms in the air, large zigzags, plants, strange shapes, and a spider. The spider is large and has a tail that looks like a claw or something. I have seen some of these types of petroglyphs at panels in Comb Ridge such as the Wolfman Petroglyphs. I’m not sure what they mean. The same shapes can be found on the heads of the anthropomorphs with their arms in the air. Who made these? Other petroglyphs in the nearby area were created by the Ancestral Pueblo. These are similar in style to those carved by them.
You may be wondering how ancient peoples were able to carve the petroglyphs 50-60 ft. off the ground! Well, I am thinking that there used to be a ledge that fell down. You can see a very long crack in the wall that looked like the spot where the ledge was at. The center rock was where the Pueblo people climbed to carve their ancient messages. To the left of this center rock are more, but very faded petroglyphs of more human-like figures, animals, and more.
When petroglyphs are this high, I always wonder “why were these carved here?” It appears that these particular petroglyphs were special enough to be carved so high to be seen from all over the valley.
Personal Thoughts
Seeing this unexpected panel was a highlight of my trip. This panel is easy to miss, but just shows how much stuff really is out there. We just need to open our eyes to see it! If you have binoculars or a telephoto lens then this panel is worth the visit! If not, the petroglyphs are very difficult to see.
[…] that looked like rock art. I flew in closer and discovered a panel that I named The Spider Petroglyph Panel! This panel is very unique and you can read more about it […]
