While driving home from a trip to Southeastern Utah, I was nearing the city of Page along highway 98 and thought I saw Moki Steps leading up to a small cave!  I pulled over and made the short hike and discovered that they are indeed Moki Steps!  There seems to be a few sets of steps here, but the steps are very worn form erosion over hundreds of years.

The hike is about 1/4 mile roundtrip and travels over a very sandy trail.

The steps lead to a very small cave (a birthing cave perhaps?), and are difficult to climb now.  I climbed the first few steps to get a peek in the cave and didn’t see anything.

What are Moki Steps?  Moki Steps are ancient carved steps created to gain access to areas where it would be impossible otherwise.  There are many Moki Steps in the Lake Powell area.  I don’t know the time these were created, but they could be anywhere between 700-1000+ years old.  The Ancestral Pueblo called this region home around that time, so it’s possible they carved these.

Personal Thoughts

Personal Thoughts

This is a neat little adventure right off the side of the road! You don't necessarily need to drop everything and drive to Page just to see this. But, if you are in the area and driving by then take a look at this archeological treasure!
