This campground is a small single loop of just 31 camp sites. Some sites can accommodate RVs up to 36 ft in length but there are no hookups and dump stations at this campground. Each camp site has a picnic table with covering and a fire pit. You will also find a nice sand area at each site for tents.
The restrooms are located near the campground entrance and are the flushing style!
The spigot for the drinking water is just outside the restrooms. There is a 5 gallon limit of water per person per day. The water tasted kind of like pool water but I was happy they did provide water but apparently it is only available seasonally. The garbage and also recycling containers are located here too.
There are no shower facilities at Hovenweep Campground.
Hovenweep Campground does not take reservations and all spots are taken as first-come first-served. So go out and find the best spot! I camped at spot 19 which had a great view of the canyon next to me and had a decently sized tree to provide shade on my tent while I was out camping. I didn’t use the sand area for my tent since the tree wasn’t close to it but it worked out good anyway.
There is no cell signal out here and the closest city with regular stores and gas is more than an hour away in Cortez, Colorado. Bluff, Utah is also about an hour away too with services. I think Montezuma Creek may be closer to Hovenweep and has a gas station but Cortez is a regular sized city.
Camping here in late June was very bad in terms of bugs. I was swarmed by no see ums, larger flies, and mosquitoes. I highly recommend you bring bug repellent.
I saw some other wildlife in the national monument including some chipmunks, ravens, chickadees, hawks, different types of lizards, a gopher and rattlesnake, and even what I think is a red-spotted toad that hopped through my camp!
Amazing views of the Milky Way at Hovenweep. The orange lights in the background are from the city of Cortez
There is a trail that leads from the campground to the Square Tower Group of ruins so you can just hike straight over there and then to the Visitor Center if you want!
Personal Thoughts
I loved Hovenweep Campground! The only very minor downside is that it was super quiet at night and I had neighbors that were literally 20 ft away from my tent (yes, some campsites are fairly close together). Luckily, they weren't loud, but I could hear the slightest sniffle or snoring from them. This is why I also recommend bringing ear plugs while camping! Other than that very minor complaint I think you will fully enjoy camping here as much as I did! It was great to make some dinner in the quiet desert night and just enjoy the stars and Milky Way.
