I spent two days exploring the Frisco area which is west of Milford, Utah. Frisco is absolutely amazing and you should check out our Trek if you haven’t already.
For this adventure, I parked on some random road, put on my boots, and headed straight up some mountains to find any open mines. After about 1/2 mile of hiking I noticed a large tailings pile near the base of one of the mountains, so I walked towards it hoping to see an open adit or shaft.
I didn’t see any “no trespassing” signs, fences, or any other indications that this is on private property. That being said, please always be respectful of the mining relics and leave them for others to enjoy too. Just take lots of pictures and respect private property when marked. Don’t enter any mines as they are inherently dangerous.
The tailings were pretty big and I estimate several thousand feet of workings below.
There are a few small broken structures around the area and it looks like there was a headframe that has been long dismantled or destroyed.
The mine shaft is unfortunately gated. I threw a few pebbles down to gauge how deep it went and it sounded like it was a couple hundred feet deep and probably went farther down.
There are other mines in the area and I went to explore those too. One of the mines is open, but only goes in a few feet. There are other mining relics to see so keep your eyes open!
Personal Thoughts
This was a small mining adventure, but I still managed to enjoy it despite only a few open mines.
