Day 10

Wednesday, December 5

Destination: Pulangbato Falls & Dumaguete City Exploration

Today, we woke up to the sights and smells of Dumaguete City!  Our hotel had included breakfast so we went down and had great views of the city market across the street.  It got me excited thinking of all the delicious local fruits we could buy while we were staying here.  We only had today as our full day in Dumaguete City so we had to pack it all in!

After getting ready for the day, we went outside the hotel and found transportation to a jeepney terminal where we could get to Pulangbato Falls.

We were trying to find an ATM in the morning and walked by these bootleg DVDs with very odd cover photos

When I lived near Dumaguete for a few months back in 2006, I never made it to Pulangbato Falls.  This was now the time to see it!  Pulangbato Falls is a beautiful sulfur stained waterfall just outside of Dumaguete.  The falls means “red stone” or “red rock” falls in Cebuano and it fits perfectly.

Once we were in the jeepney, my anxiety began to skyrocket.  When I was living here I was still fairly new to the Philippines and I was unnecessarily worried about always trying to find sitting space on jeepneys.  We always did find place to sit, but for some reason, as someone new the Philippines in 2006, these types of rides made me anxious.

Maybe it was the PTSD, but my anxiety was getting higher and higher and then I looked outside the jeepney window and saw the jungle going by.  It made me relax and I realized I am on vacation!

After a short ride, we were at our stop.  The jeepney dumped us off the side of the road where some guys on motorcycles were waiting.  They asked if we needed a ride to Pulangbato Falls since it was still 2/3 mile to get there.  We decided to just walk the remaining distance and enjoyed it immensely!  It was fun to walk through a residential neighborhood and enjoy the scenery.

The falls are at a resort in which you will need to pay the entrance fee.  It was cheap to enter and we ended up spending a few hours there.  We got to see Pulangbato Falls and go swimming at the resort.  We even ate there too.

Pulangbato Falls are incredible!  The blue water mixed with the red rocks make for incredible pictures!  The cool water felt so good after hiking up the road to the resort.  There are hot springs nearby, but at the resort it’s only cool water.

After our visit, we walked back down the road to the jeepney stop and got a ride back to Dumaguete City.  We checked out some souvenir shops and the city mall.

The rest of the night we went to the market and walked around town.  We stopped and got some famous silvanas, which are little pastry treat things. It’s hard to explain, but they are delicious and we have only found them in Dumaguete.

After this, we got dinner at a nearby place called KEM restaurant.  They had pretty good food!

It was now time for bed!  We had a long day and we were super tired!  Tomorrow we head to the Island of Bohol!
