Destination: Cedar Breaks and the Ice Cave

Today we went out to Brian Head for the day.  Brian Head is near Cedar City and is a full-fledged ski resort.  There was already lots of snow on the north facing slopes and all of the aspen trees had lost their leaves.  It seemed like winter had arrived!  But, it ended up being just fine, because once we got to Cedar Breaks there wasn’t much snow!

Cedar Breaks is a national monument that is strikingly similar to Bryce Canyon, but it’s much smaller.  There are several trails and overlooks that lookout over the red and orange canyons below.  It’s worth the visit if you haven’t been there before.  Overall, there isn’t much else to do at Cedar Breaks.

We drove about 20 more minutes to the ice cave next.  The ice cave is located in a small community called Duck Creek.  Not much is at Duck Creek besides residential cabins.  I think there was a restaurant somewhere, but we didn’t have enough time to explore the area.

The ice cave is located about 50 yards from where you park.  It’s kind of a steep drop into the cave, but previous visitors put logs to aid you down.  We spent a few minutes exploring the cave.  It’s not that big, but it’s still neat to see.

Lessons Learned

Most of the Cedar Breaks and Brian Head area are over 9,500 ft in elevation!  Make sure to pace yourself and take time to catch your breath.
