9 Mile Canyon is full of Beautiful Scenery Pictographs Petroglyphs Ruins
My mom and I spent all day Saturday driving from Northern Utah to 9 Mile Canyon. It’s a long drive, but with a couple of podcasts and music, it’s a great drive! This was my second time bringing a drone and we were excited to scout out more ruins we thought were on top of some cliffs.
I have been to 9 Mile Canyon about eight times now. Every time I visit, I discover something new. There are many ancient secrets in this and the surrounding canyons that were hidden by the Fremont people about 700-1200+ years ago. They loved this area as evident by the huge amount of rock art, ruins and structures, and many artifacts scattered about the canyons.
Once we got into the canyon entrance, we whipped out the drone and started flying all over. Not much could be found, or rather, we didn’t see much at the first part. So, we drove farther down the canyon until we felt like I should stop and fly the drone. We spent the next four hours, stopping and flying, over and over, until we decided to head home.
I have made an extensive guide on 9 Mile Canyon. Almost all of the GPS coordinates are for Insider Members. Most of the guides on the internet or books, don’t even have GPS coordinates (they use mile marker posts) in their guides. I only use GPS coordinates since it’s easier to find and you can still receive decent GPS signal in the canyon. Having a drone has changed the exploration game. We found a few new (to us) ruins and petroglyphs where we never would have suspected. Petroglyphs on top of the mesas; ruins in hidden and hard-to-find places; amazing scenery you wouldn’t be able to see otherwise!
It’s funny, we pulled over to the side of the road and were just admiring the beautiful canyon, when another car came up and pulled up behind us. They thought we were looking at some rock art and were frantically scanning the nearby rocks for any petroglyphs. After a minute, they sped off. This happened several times! I guess they should have got our world famous Trek Planner 9 Mile Canyon Guide to find all the best rock art 😉 We hiked to several spots to see some pictographs near to the road too! Enjoy these pictures from our visit!
When we go camping in the Canyonlands, we are always overjoyed to hear someone flying their drone.
Hey Brad, this isn’t in Canyonlands. Is there a 9 Mile Canyon in Canyonlands too?
