Trail Condition
Good trail that isn’t marked. You simply just hiked up the canyon as far as you want to go. There are some short slot canyon sections that aren’t tight by any means, but provide a fun experience. There may be water at some parts of the canyon, but I avoided all of it

This is a fun little side canyon off of Buckhorn Draw Road that provides a few short sections of narrow slot canyon experiences. I use the term “slot canyon” loosely in this Trek since the slot canyon parts in Furniture Draw are still fairly wide and anyone could get through them.
You begin hiking right at the entrance to Furniture Draw Canyon. Just follow the canyon for about four turns and then you will arrive at the first narrow part. Along the way, I found some historical graffiti on the sandstone walls. I didn’t see any petroglyphs on this trip, but maybe there are some? There is plenty of evidence of Buckhorn Draw being used by Native Americans with many different sites for petroglyphs.
This canyon is quiet and doesn’t see many visitors. You will probably have it all to yourself like I did! Just be prepared for anything. I knew this canyon was a short one, but I still packed some extra water and food just-in-case.
You will encounter the first narrow part of the canyon at about 3/4 mile into the hike and it will stay narrow for about 800 ft! Kids would love climbing all over the rocks and learning basic stemming and canyoneering skills! You won’t be pushed hard in this canyon. This is a very basic and easy canyon to introduce you into slot canyons. You won’t even need to bring any canyoneering or climbing equipment or have any knowledge of climbing to do this canyon successfully. This is why I put this at a hiking category than a canyoneering category.
I found a little bit of water inside the more narrower part, but it was easily avoidable and I just walked on the side. You may find more water or less water, it just depends on the time of year and recent rains/snow. I hiked beyond this a little ways until I figured the fun parts were over and hiked back down. And, that’s it! You just hike as far as you want and come back. It’s a very simple and easy adventure! You could easily hike this from the top down, but that would require a shuttle system or you hiking back up. The top area isn’t as pretty as the lower parts of the canyon, so I recommend hiking this from down to up.
Personal Thoughts
You will enjoy Furniture Draw a little bit more if you don't expect a grand slot canyon experience. This is just a simple adventure with some narrow parts in the canyon.
3 friends and I (age 60+) have one day in the Price region before exploring 9-mile Canyon the next day. If we have time after the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, we’d like to explore Furniture Draw either before or after we visit the Wedge Overlook. What time of afternoon would be best to visit either site in terms of photos? We’ll be there on Sept. 24th. What’s the min. amount of time we’d need to hike the narrow portion of Furniture Draw? Where exactly are the Morrison Knudson Tunnels? On another one of your posts you have a picture of a… Read more »
Hi Kerry, I think anytime after 6pm would be good for pictures. The narrow portion of Furniture Draw could easily be seen in perhaps 30-40 minutes. There are a bunch of Morrison Knudson Tunnels. There is one just to the west of the canyon entrance to Furniture Draw. It’s gated though. Which post are you referring to with the open tunnels? Are you talking about one of my videos perhaps? Those tunnels are extremely delicate. One of the shafts is open, but it just drops down a ways and ends. The tunnels in my video are gated. I hope you… Read more »
