Note: Please do not touch the rock art.  Do not carve or deface the rock art. Enjoy these by taking all the photos you want!  The Intestines Man Pictographs blend in well with the surrounding rock.

I stumbled upon these pictographs online while looking for new hikes in the Moab Area.  I found a picture that had the caption “Intestines Man”, and I was immediately intrigued by what that could mean.  So I set out to try and find the pictographs!

These pictographs are hard to see from the road because they blend in well with the rock.  They are even hard to see up close.  There is a narrow trail that leads to them, but if you don’t know what to look for you will walk right past them.  They are hiding right underneath a ledge about 12 ft. off the ground.  You can get much closer, but it’s a precarious climb. So, I decided anyway to get closer to examine the incredible rock art.

From the ground view, you can’t see all the detail, but when you are up close you can see all the very narrow lines that make up the three anthropomorphs (human-like figures).  The left one seems to have long hair.  The right one looks to be holding some type of grain or corn or plant.  The middle one is the Intestines Man with what appears to be, well, intestines.  Our modern day interpretation could be wrong and it could be something entirely different than intestines. It looks like it is holding its hands in the air.  Above him are hash-marks of some kind.

Either way, this is a fantastic example of pictographs as you can see the dark reds and even some green paint in this set.

There are some other pictographs in the area and also lots of petroglyphs on the walls farther down.
