Be a responsible explorer

We decided to head over to Stockton and explore some of the old mines on the other side of the hill from Honerine.  We knew that Honerine Mine was a very large mine so we figured we would explore some of the other mines and see what they had inside.

You will feel a major draft as you enter Whiskey Flask Mine.  The draft is coming from the upper vertical shaft (see GPS coordinates of where this shaft is located outside).

Here is the entrance. It is tiny and you will need to lay flat and slide right in. It gets opens up about 7 feet down

About 50 feet or so from the entrance there is a fork in the tunnel.  The right fork continues for another 10 feet where we found a skull, bones and a pair of old boots.  The left fork continues down the mine.

My friend climbed as far as he could to the top of this drift and he said he could see faint day light coming in.  He said it was smooth rock but we definitely could not climb down it without ropes.  We wanted to see if we could find the top entrance from the outside so after we explored in the mine we headed back outside and hiked to the top of the hill and found the vertical shaft entrance which you can see in the below picture.

Here is the vertical shaft entrance into Whiskey Flask Mine. It probably drops about 200+ feet to the main level of the mine.

Continuing on in the mine you will find many more tunnels and drifts that slope upwards.  We explored several of these and some go up for a good ways but most only go up 50+ feet and end.

We found several whiskey flasks that still had a little bit of whiskey inside of them and then we came back down to explore the rest of the mine until we could find the very end of it.

At the very end of the mine you will find several signatures on the wall. One is from a Curt during 1952.

Personal Thoughts

Personal Thoughts

This mine was an unexpected surprise. We were simply exploring the mines in the little valley and checked to see if this mine was open. It had many old artifacts including several whiskey flasks, buckets and even some animal bones. We don't know what the real name of this mine was but we decided to call it Whiskey Flask because we found several old whiskey flasks in the back of the mine.
