Rating System

The table below is used by The Trek Planner for each Trek on our website.  Obviously, a Trek author might rate a trek differently than another author but this is the rating table we use to try and give you a general idea on what to expect from the Trek.

1 Paved Road

< 1hr. You can do this without burning calories. Family Friendly

Very casual. Not too much walking invloved. < 30 min
2 Graded Dirt Road

1hr. Very leisurely. Family Friendly. Strollers usable

Mostly walking. < 1 hr, < 1 mile of walking
3 Exposed Dirt road

1-3hrs. Walking. Family Friendly. < 1hr underground. Daylight visible the entire time. Family friendly. Moderate walking distance. Museums, learning centers, etc. 1-2 miles, 1-2 hrs
4 Two Track Easy 1 mile or so, single night; nearly flat. Family friendly  – 1-5hrs. Decent exercise; lots of walking. Older Family Friendly. 1-2hrs underground. Very simple passages. Family Friendly. Longer walking distances. This would include zoos, large museums etc. 2-4 miles , 2-3 hrs
5 Two Track Small Rocks or Obstacles < 5 miles a day, 2-3 days, easy terrain.  – 2-6hrs. Solid hiking 2-4hrs underground. Considerable walking involved. >4 miles, 3+ hrs
6 Two Track Large Rocks or Obstacles < 10 miles a day, 2-4 days.  – 3-8hrs. Longer, harder hiking 4-7hrs underground.

7 Vague Trail Unmaintained Large Rocks 4×4 useful < 10 miles a day, 5-7 days or difficult 2-4 day.  – 4-10hrs. Now you are sweating! Hard/steep hiking. 6-10hrs underground. Chance of getting lost or really getting hurt. Easy Vertical

8 Very Rough. Steep. Rocks. 4×4 Neccesary. < 15 miles a day, 5-7 days. or difficult 10 mile a day.  – 5-12hrs. Dang this hurts! Serious hiking/scrambling. 8-16hrs underground. Hard vertical. Training and guide needed.

9 Rough. Steep. Rocks. 4×4 and winch or buddy assistance needed < 15 miles a day, week+ duration. Steap and varied. Strenuous  – 10-16hrs. Training required: multifaceted hiking, scrambling, climbing. 15-24hrs underground. Multifacited. “Abondon all hope, ye who enter here.”

10 Team work required, Trail Blazing, Large Rocks, Strenuous. Advanced riders only > 15 miles a day, two week+ duration, steap. Strenuous  – 15-24+hrs.You MUST have trained to complete it. Possibly life threatening. Possibly really stupid. 24+hrs underground. Multi-day trip. Multifacited: climbing, swimming, etc.

Technicality
1 None. Any schlub can do this sitting down and blindfolded. Family Friendly.  –  –  –

5 Basic Climbing, backpacking simple.
