The Trail
Follow along on our adventure then go out on your own!

Note: this trail begins very close to private property. Please be respectful of signs and the property and do not trespass. Also, please be respectful of the rock art and do not touch it or carve your own name. There has been vandalism to these petroglyphs, so please respect them and just take pictures.
Once at the trailhead, you will need to hike a few hundred feet to the east until you see the trail cut directly north. Follow the powerline path To get to the Moab Mastodon you’ll need to hike along the powerline path for about 800 ft. until you come closer to the cliffs. Scan the lowest part of the cliffs to see the rock art. The Moab Mastodon is one of the largest petroglyphs on this small panel! You can see other petroglyphs including anthropomorphs, big horn sheep, and another large animal with large toes!
Some people believe that this is an actual depiction of a mastodon. If true, that would mean that this petroglyph would be extremely old! The mastodon went extinct about 10,500 years ago! It’s very exciting to think about the implications of this fascinating petroglyph. You can clearly see a tusk on the right side of the glyph.
Other people believe that this is a bear catching a fish. Whatever it is, it’s a great petroglyph and worth the visit!

Personal Thoughts
The Moab Mastodon petroglyph is one of the most interesting petroglyphs in the area and worth the visit. I love thinking about the idea that ancient peoples in this area have seen mastodon. We of course, have no idea if this is actually indeed a mastodon or not, but it does look like an elephant-type animal to the imagination!
Outstanding photos! Thanks.
Thank you, RD!
