The Trail:

Lava Hot Springs is a very busy place in the summer. If you are planning on more than a day trip be sure to plan accordingly to ensure lodging or camping. I have camped at the KOA several times and it is pretty decent with nice showers. This is a great little town to spend a couple days. There are many activities but it is mostly known for its water adventures. There is a huge swimming pool with slides and a 33 foot diving platform.

A year round destination here are the actual hot springs the town in named for. The Lava Hot Pools. These are very large and there are different pools with different temperatures. I have made several trips in winter just to soak in these pools. They are some of the best hot springs anywhere.

By far my favorite activity here is tubing the river. I love tubing but normally its a whole lot of flat water with a couple of OK rapids. At lava it is straight action the whole time. It takes 20-25 minutes to run the main section then its about a ten minute walk back to the top and you can keep going and trying different routes. You can bring your own tube or rent one. There are many tube rental shacks in town. Its impossible to get lost because there are tubers everywhere but once on the river it isn’t overly crowded. The funnest part are two waterfalls that you go down the rest is mostly cascades. There are only a couple parts where water is over your head which means its a decent time even for kids with a life jacket. Be careful though as the river is full of volcanic rock that does cut you up pretty good if you fall off and don’t get lucky. The water here in summer is very nice and refreshing in the summer. There are also a couple hot springs on the shores of the river as you go that you can hop in but in summer I prefer the nice cool river water. Here are a couple pictures of what to expect on the river.

Personal Thoughts:

This is a great place to go spend a couple of summer nights. People of all ages can have fun here at the top notch pool area or having fun cooling off in the river. If people are nervous the waterfalls can be bypassed so it can be fun for anyone. This is a place I try and make it to at least once a year and have for a long time and I am not bored of it yet. Its also a great place for a nice warm soak in the winter.

The Bottom Line

Difficulty is basically the length, duration and stress of the Trek.  If the Trek is really long then it will receive a higher rating. If the Trek is short then it won't receive that high of a rating. However, difficulty rating also includes how tired we were at the end of the Trek.

Technicality is how strenuous the Trek is. If there is lots of bouldering or if there is bushwhacking involved then the rating will be higher. Technicality also includes if there are steep inclines or the need for ropes and other equipment.

Enjoyment is strictly how much fun we had doing the Trek. Regardless of how tired and exhausted we were, if we had a ton of fun doing the Trek then it will receive a higher rating.
