Day 1

Destination: Drive to Mexican Mountain

I had an afternoon open and decided to fill it up by driving to a place I’ve wanted to visit for a long time: Mexican Mountain!  The drive starts through the Buckhorn Draw Road in Central Utah and then eventually cuts east on Mexican Mountain Road.  The road is in mostly condition except you will want high-clearance.  I got most of the way in my low-clearance Impala, and regretted coming so far.  It got too tricky for me, so I pulled over and pulled out my bike and biked the rest of the way.

This area is extremely remote.  I only saw one other person on this journey and knew that if I got stuck I would be in trouble.  Lucky for me I had my satellite messenger and plenty of food and water, so I was prepared to at least wait for help.  I could also just walk back on the road to the Swinging Bridge Campground at the Swell where I knew there were a few people camping.  Either way, I wasn’t too worried because the road, for the most part, wasn’t terrible until near the end.

Lessons Learned

I really need a truck or Jeep or something.

It was interesting where my mind goes sometimes. This was my first time down this road and the farther I went the more anxious I became. Yet, after getting out and biking and exploring a bit, I felt much better. I think nature has a way of doing that.
