This is a great drive that takes you up and over the Oquirrh Mountains between Herriman and Tooele, Utah. This is a great place for an evening with great views. This area is particularly beautiful in the fall with many colors in the trees. You will also get a great birdseye view of one of the largest mines on earth. The Oquirrh Mountains are west of Salt Lake City and see far less traffic than the Wasatch Range across the valley. We will start from the Herriman side but it can easily be done in any direction. We did this is a car and as long as it is not muddy it would be doable in most vehicles. Starting off you will see the giant tailings of the Kennecott Copper Mine.
The road will quickly go into the trees and is very nice.
The views open up and there are great views of the Wasatch Range across the valley.
Everywhere around there are oranges, reds, and yellows.
There will be one detour that is a right hand turn that will take you to West Peak. You will begin to get views of some higher peaks in the range on the side road.
The end of the side road affords awesome views of the Kennecott Mine from above. This thing is massive. I will show a few zoomed in photos are things to give you an idea of the scale.
See if you can spot the normal sized truck in the next three photos?
Before leaving west peak enjoy a few more views of the mountains.
Return to the main road where you will now descend Middle Canyon and into Tooele. The views on the way are great with more trees and colors.
This makes a great evening or afternoon off road drive that gives some awesome views and is a cool place if you like to see gigantic mines. Some people may find the mine to be a tragedy and an eyesore but I think it is beautiful and cool in its own way.
